Ever look at a photo and wish you could just summon the subject right out of it? It feels like high level witch craft, but it’s actually a simple design trick anyone can master in Canva. Stop settling for flat, boxy photos when a cutout would look so much better.

✨Your Potion Kit – To use this summoning spell, you’ll need a photo with a clear subject and a Canva Pro account.

Step-By-Step: Mastering Magic Grab

Step 1: Prepare Your Workspace

Open a new design in the size you’d like your final cutout to be. For this example I am going to use 1080 x 1080 px.

Step 2: Upload Your Image

Upload the photograph you wish to work with into your design. Simply drag and drop it onto your canvas to get started. Or you can go over to elements and find an image in Canva to use.

Step 3: Start Summoning Using the Right Tools

Select your image on the canvas, then head to the Edit button in the top toolbar. A pop-up menu will appear on the left—select See all under the “Tools” section to reveal your options.

Step 4: Activate Background Remover Or Magic Grab

Now, select Background Remover. This is our preferred spell because it gives the easiest results.

Note: If you are working with a more complex image, you can also experiment with Magic Grab instead. Once you have Magic Grab selected, Click on the subject you want to isolate, and hit ‘Grab.’ If you use this method, just remember to delete the original background layer afterward to reveal your new transparent cutout!

Now, select Background Remover. This is our preferred spell because it gives the easiest results. You can also use Magic Grab if it is a more complex image.

Step 5: Save the File

Once you are happy with your creation, go to File and select Download. Choose PNG as your file type and check the box for Transparent background.

Step 6: Store in Your Grimoire

Head over to your Canva Brand Hub, upload your new transparent cutout into your Graphics, and voila, it’s now ready to be summoned onto any design or website project at a moment’s notice!
